Flakey Friends Pop Up Christmas Card
Happy Monday! I missed you guys over the last few weeks whilst the fabulous ’12 Designers of Christmas’ were sharing their projects on the blog here. What an awesome collection of fantastic projects – if you didn’t get a chance to take a look, I advise that you scroll back through the last few blog posts for a major inspiration boost! You won’t be disappointed!
In my last post, I gave a little sneak peek of a Christmas card, and I can finally share it with you guys today! Sorry it took longer than expected – Here it is!
My card features the More Flakey Friends set– just look at that penguin – isn’t he simply adorable!? I actually designed the inside of this card first, and I was inspired by some cool pop up dies that I saw in an online craft shop. I didn’t have any of these dies, so decided to see if I could ‘fudge it’ – teehee! I cut a few thin strips of cardstock, about 0.5cm wide x 3.5cm long, and made crease marks at 1cm, 1.5cm, 2.5cm and 3 cm, then glued the ends together to create a loop. The creases actually create a little box shape, which can then be glued onto the back of each pop up panel. Here is a little diagram to help you understand…
To start, I used my distress inks and mini blending tool to make a bright, ink blended background, and spritzed this with water to create a distressed effect. I love that it sort of looks like light glares or bokeh effects. Next I used some stitched hillside border dies to plan some snowy mounds, and stamped a bunch of images from the onto some neenah cardstock.
To colour the images, I tapped my distress inks onto an acrylic block and used a damp paintbrush to pick up the colour and ‘paint’ the images. This is a really fun way to get more mileage out of your ink pads. Once all my images were coloured in, I stuck them to the panels, then used double sided sticky tape to adhere two folded card strips to the back of each panel.
I thought it would be fun to extend the illusion of rolling hills all the way down to the bottom of the card on the inside, so I cut and stuck down a few extra die cut hilly panels after adding a little ink to the edges. I then used my MISTI to stamp the greeting on the inside. I used the large ‘happy’ from the Happiness stamp set, and then I white heat embossed the word ‘Christmas’ underneath, using a stamp from the Sending You Sentiments set. After I had heated up the white embossing ink, I used some washi tape to mask off a little rectangle around the word Christmas, and used a finger dauber to add some pink ink. The heat embossing resists the ink and then the word POPS against the inked cardstock!
Because the inside of this card is ‘all business’ I decided to go for a more simple design on the outside. I die cut an inverted scalloped circle onto a rectangle of card (using the Mama Elephant All Prettied Up dies) and then stamped, masked and inked the inner panel. This time Mr. Penguin needed a friend, and it was a good job this cute deer was nearby! I think they make the perfect pair! I used one of the sentiments from the More Flakey Friends set to add a greeting, and finished off the card with a little sprinkle of embellishments!
Thanks for stopping by, and I wanted to take a moment to wish you all a very Merry Christmas. I hope you have a fantastic holiday full of fun! Only 6 more sleeps to go! YAY! See you on the other side!
Happy Crafting my sweet friends!
